Blogging NECC2007: Create Mind-Maps Easily using Freemind

khansen's picture

I used [Freemind](http://freemind.sourceforge.net) to take notes on this session. I wanted to fully test it and found it was quite easy to use once you learn the most important keystrokes. Once you know those, it is really fast to add new nodes and branches, moving around with the arrow keys.

And so, here is the PNG version of my notes.

Here is the HTML output of that same map exported from Freemind as I took notes.

Presentation on Freemind

  • Freemind Notes

    • I've used it

      • XP

        • works great with java installed

        • shortcuts are fine
      • Linux
        • works great once JAVA is installed

        • shortcuts work great
      • os X
        • works great

        • shortcuts are strange
          • they can be changed

I just tried it during the presentation and all the keystrokes have worked like they should and I didn't change them using the above link.  OS X developers must have made some changes.  The main difference is using the "Apple" key instead of "Control".  Hopefully this works well for others out there using os X as well.

      • What I liked
        • Mind maps are great for organizing your thoughts

I would have loved to have something like this when I was in english class.  I know all you english teachers will say we could've done it on paper and that it true.  I just didn't have any teachers that did that.  I'm just saying I would've enjoyed doing it with a tool like freemind.

          Some rules for maps

          • easy to read font

          • as little words a possible
            • per line

            • more attractive to the mind
          • no stress about
            • few words

            • capitalization
            • spelling?
            • Similar to branstorming
              • get ideas out as fast as possible

              • go back and review ideas

Interesting to see how the presentation was done

          • Presenter from India

          • I wonder how Educational Theory over there compares to here?
      • Questions/Concerns
        • I understand the premise for discussing the reason for using mind-maps

          • but it went too long

          • people wanted to use Freemind quicker
          • "singing to the choir" type of thing
  • Example from presenter:problems facing students
    • Learn

      • to much

      • unable
      • time
      • relevance
      • application
    • remember
      • Too much

      • unable to
      • not enough time

Hi, I am glad you found my

Hi,
I am glad you found my session useful. In my company we have started using mind maps in a big way. Freemind is our favourite software.
I agree with your point that I should've moved on to the software part quicker instead of delving about the mind mapping rules too much.
